In April 2026 users on Reddit and X noticed that Anthropic's Claude pricing page listed Claude Code as unsupported on the $20-a-month Pro plan, while the $100-a-month-and-up Max plan kept it. Some new Pro subscribers could not reach the tool, though existing subscribers saw no interruption, Ars Technica reported on 22 April.

Amol Avasare, Anthropic's head of growth, said on social media it was a 'small test on ~2% of new prosumer signups'. He explained that Max was designed for heavy chat use and launched without Claude Code, but that since then Claude Code had been bundled in, Cowork had launched and long-running async agents had become everyday workflows. 'Our current plans weren't built for this,' he wrote, adding that Anthropic was looking at different options.

Users stayed upset that a trial on 2% of sign-ups came with public-facing documentation updated as if the change applied to everyone. The pricing page was soon updated to show Claude Code in Pro again. Ars noted that Anthropic had already drawn criticism for tighter limits at peak hours, and that many developers had built daily workflows on the tool.

Usage per subscriber had risen sharply since Claude Code and long-running agents arrived, and the plans were not priced for it, per Avasare.

Anthropic ran the experiment on only ~2% of new signups but changed the public pricing page and documentation for everyone.

Users first spotted the change themselves on social media; Avasare later promised they would 'hear it from us, not a screenshot on X or Reddit'.

Compute was limited and demand had risen as users arrived from competitors and third-party tools like OpenClaw consumed large amounts of tokens, according to Ars.

A small test is not small if the public docs announce it to everyone. Tell existing users first, or run the experiment where only the test group can see it.

The pricing page was changed back to show Claude Code in the Pro plan. Avasare promised that if a change affects existing subscribers, 'you'll get plenty of notice before anything changes'. Ars's reader comments included a Pro subscriber who said strict hourly and weekly limits already made Pro unusable for Claude Code and that a refund was refused.
